Welcome to Mrs. Roseman's Website! First Graders are working hard, having fun, and learning every day. Our days are full and busy! You can help your child do his/her best by providing a good night's sleep each night, a healthy breakfast every morning, reading together each night, and support with staying organized.
Providing a quiet space and time for homework, helping with directions or questions, and reminding your child to place everything in his/her homework folder will ensure your child's success.
We are having a great year together!
LANGUAGE ARTS
In Language Arts (Reading, Writing, Spelling, Phonics) students will work as a whole class, in small groups or partners, and independently to become strong readers and writers.
We use a Reading Workshop model, based on the Lucy Calkins Units of Study. Materials also used in first grade may include "Making Meaning" and "Benchmark Literacy" for comprehension instruction, Scholastic News, leveled readers and trade books for small group guided reading, individually leveled book boxes for independent reading ("Read to Self"), Lucy Calkins' Writing Workshop and "Six Traits" for writing, and Fundations for spelling, phonics, and handwriting instruction.
Reading and writing skills are also used throughout the day in other subject areas such as math, social studies, or science.
In addition to learning at school, it is important that your child reads independently and is read to every day at home in order to become a strong successful reader. Please read to and with your child each night and log his/her time in the Sippican Reading Log each night (copies may be printed from the school website).
SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE
These topics are integrated into reading and writing time.
Science topics: Seasons, Animals in Winter, Life Cycles, Weather, Solids and Liquids
Social Studies topics: Getting to Know You/Building a Classroom Community, Holidays, Important People, Family Traditions, Folk Tales, American Symbols
Major Health Topics: No Bullying, Nutrition, Safety, Dental Health, Good Decision Making, Hygiene
MATH
Sippican uses Every Day Math in grades K to 6. You can learn more about Every Day Math at their website www.everydaymath.com.
Math homework: First graders will have a small amount of math homework each weeknight (Monday through Thursday). Please check your child's homework folder to keep up to date on current math topics and homework. Homework reinforces what has been introduced and practiced in class, and children are expected to put forth their best effort to complete it. Please monitor and assist as needed. Please let me know if the work is much too difficult for your child.
To contact me, please email: [email protected] or call Sippican School (748-0100) during school hours (8:00 - 4:00).
Thanks for visiting!
